Nicotine & Vaping Awareness
Vaping is NOT Harmless
Vaping is often misunderstood as a safer alternative to smoking, yet it poses real risks for children and teens. Many vaping products contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can affect brain development, attention, learning, and impulse control. Because youth brains are still developing, nicotine exposure during adolescence can have long-term effects on health and behavior.
Vaping devices are easy to hide, often odorless, and come in sleek designs that make them appealing to young people. These factors contribute to increased experimentation and regular use among teens, even when they understand vaping may be harmful.
Youth Marketing & Flavored Products
Although some manufacturers have discontinued specific flavored products, replacements remain widely available. Many vaping products are sold in flavors such as fruit, candy, and dessert varieties that are especially appealing to youth. These flavors can mask the harshness of nicotine and make it easier for young people to start and continue using vaping products.
High-nicotine, disposable vapes and flavored options increase the risk of addiction, particularly for teens who may underestimate how much nicotine they are consuming.
What we are seeing in our communities
In spring 2023, local surveillance of vape retailers in Barkhamsted, New Hartford, and Winsted revealed patterns that raise concern for youth access and exposure. Retailers carried a wide range of popular vaping brands, many of which are known to be appealing to young people. While all retailers held current licenses, not all displayed required signage related to age restrictions or health warnings.
Vaping devices were found both behind the counter and in front of the counter in some locations, increasing visibility and normalizing use. Advertising in store windows was common, while health warnings were limited. These environmental factors matter because increased exposure and normalization can influence youth perceptions and behavior.
Taking Action
Why Prevention Matters: Preventing youth vaping requires more than awareness alone. It involves:
- Educating youth, parents, and caregivers
- Reducing access & visibility
- Supporting retailers with compliance and signage
- Addressing misconceptions about safety
- Providing resources for youth who want help quitting nicotine
Early prevention and consistent community messaging help protect youth health and reduce long-term nicotine dependence.
Northwest Hills Prevention Connection works with community partners to address youth vaping through education, outreach, and collaboration. Our efforts include supporting compliance with age-restriction laws, sharing local data, educating families and schools, and promoting healthier environments for youth.
Vaping prevention is a shared responsibility, and progress happens when communities work together to create clear norms and supportive pathways for young people.
